HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for April 9-15

Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, April 9 through Friday, April 15. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.

Female nominees

Daneesha Davidson, track, Hillsborough: At the Class 3A, District 9 meet, Davidson showed off her versatility, winning the triple jump (37 feet, 2.25 inches) and the 300 hurdles (44.38) to lead the Terriers to the team title.

Kasey Locke, softball, Strawberry Crest: The senior went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the Chargers’ 10-0 win over Wharton in the Class 8A, District 4 championship. She also was 2-for-3 in a semifinal win over Wiregrass Ranch.

Paige Pfent, softball, Springstead: The sophomore was a combined 7-for-8 with two triples a homer and five RBIs in wins over Lecanto and Crystal River to take the Class 6A, District 6 title.

Kendall Tipton, softball, Land O’Lakes: In the Class 6A, District 7 tournament, the senior was 3-for-4 against Wesley Chapel in the semifinals and had a run-scoring double against River Ridge in the championship game.

Caylie Van Auken, softball, Boca Ciega: The Pirate threw a three-hit shutout, recorded 15 strikeouts and scored the only run in a 1-0 victory over Tarpon Springs as Bogie repeated as district champion.

Geetha Velusamy, tennis, East Lake: Velusamy was the No. 2 seed in the Class 3A state tournament, winning her quarterfinal and semifinal in straight sets. She advanced to the final, losing to top-seeded Alexandra Belaya of Melbourne Viera 6-2, 6-3. She also reached the doubles semis with Sarah Klug.

Male nominees

Adam Ambrozy, tennis, St. Petersburg: Ambrozy, the top-ranked player in the Class 4A individual singles tournament, won the state championship. The senior won all three of his matches in straight sets and did not lose more than three games in a match.

Connor Cedro and Ivan von Greiff, tennis, Berkeley Prep: The top-seeded tandem won their opening matches in straight sets, then ran into Shorecrest’s Peter Litsky and Luis Sarabia in the final. The Buccaneers clinched the state title in a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 match.

Owen Clanahan, track, Bishop McLaughlin: The junior won the 100-meter dash (11.10), the 200 (23.24) and was second in the 300 hurdles (41.54) in the Class A-6 meet. He was also a member of the Hurricanes’ winning  4x100-meter relay.

Anthony Gonnella, baseball, Riverview: The senior went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored in Riverview’s regular-season finale, 11-0 victory against Spoto. Gonnella finished the regular season with a .328 batting average and 19 RBIs.

Garrett Jerothe, track, River Ridge: The senior achieved a personal-record height at the competitive Steinbrenner Invitational, clearing 14-6 at the meet. A few days later he won the event again at the Class 3A, District 7 meet.  

Peter Litsky, tennis, Shorecrest: Litsky won his second straight Class A individual state championship on Thursday, and he made it look easy. The senior won all three of his matches in straight sets and never lost more than two games in a set. In the final, he won 6-1, 6-0.
