HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Feb. 27-March 4

4

March

Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Feb. 27 through Friday, March 4. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.

Female nominees

Ashley Autuori, softball, Mitchell: The sophomore pitched in all three wins this week, including a 10-3 win over Osceola to extend the Mustangs’ six-game win streak and keep them undefeated in Class 7A, District 10. Against Anclote, she recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts.

Melissa Baldino, track, Osceola: The senior owned the throwing events at the Richard Allen Relays, taking first in the discus (97-5) and shot put (33-3). Her marks in both events were nearly a foot farther than her closest competitor.

Ashley Blessin, softball, Plant City: The freshman pitcher gave up one run on three hits and recorded 13 strikeouts in a 2-1 over Durant that helped the Raiders exact revenge from their only loss of the season against their rival last month.

Bailey Hertenstein, track, Riverview: The cross country state champion won the 1,600 meters (5:06) and two-mile (10:53) at Friday’s Jack Rice Invitational, helping Riverview finish in first. Hertenstein, who set the nation’s top time in the 1,600 at last weekend’s Wharton Invite (4:59.29), was also named MVP on Friday.

Anessa Holes, softball, River Ridge: The senior was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in a 3-2 win over Anclote and threw a four-hit shutout in a 10-0, five-inning win over Zephyrhills that avenged a loss earlier this season.

Emily Hollenbeck, softball, Countryside: The senior was a combined 5-for-8 with four RBIs and two runs scored in wins over Palm Harbor University and East Lake this week.

Male nominees

Julian Bosnic, baseball, Berkeley Prep: The sophomore threw a no-hitter in a five-inning, 10-0 win against Brooks DeBartolo. The right-hander struck out 11 and walked two in the game to help keep the Bucs undefeated on the season.

Jeff Goodwin, track, Northside Christian: The senior was dominant in the field events at the Bay Conference meet with first-place finishes in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches), long jump (19-10) and triple jump (39-3).

Trevor Hawks, baseball, River Ridge: Hawks came through in the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk-off single that helped defeat previously unbeaten Zephyrhills 5-4. River Ridge gave up four runs in the top of the seventh to fall behind 4-3 before Hawks won it. Derek Jaar, baseball, Northeast: The senior transfer from Pinellas Park went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in a 9-5 win over district opponent Mitchell. He is now hitting .483 with 11 RBIs in nine games.

Darin Kilfoyl, baseball, Academy at the Lakes: The junior struck out a whopping 19 batters in a 7-0 win over Lakeland Victory Christian. He allowed only one hit in the complete-game shutout.

Cullen Telfer, wrestling, Strawberry Crest: The sophomore won his fourth region title with a 17-1 technical pin in the final. On Friday, the defending state champ scored a 16-1 technical pin to advance to the championship semifinals at the Class 3A meet in Kissimmee.

Voting is now closed.
