HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Jan. 14-20



Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Jan. 14 through Friday, Jan. 20. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.

Female nominees

Katie Flinter, soccer, Carrollwood Day: The eighth-grader has scored two goals all season. Her second turned out to be the winner in a 3-2 win over Seffner Christian in the Class A, District 5 final.

Angeline Friel, soccer, St. Petersburg: The sophomore goalkeeper made eight penalty-kick saves in a win over Seminole in the Class 4A, District 10 semifinals. She then recorded her 11th shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Countryside in the final.

Sydney Lovell, soccer, Hudson: The senior scored the only goal in a 1-0 upset of Land O’Lakes in the Class 3A, District 8 final. It was her eighth goal of the season.

Sabrina Wagner, soccer, Mitchell: The senior forward scored three goals and had two assists in a 9-2 win over Sickles in the Class 4A, District 8 final. Wagner only played in the first half.

Megan Watson, basketball, Strawberry Crest: The freshman scored 10 points in a win over Bloomingdale and added a game-high 28 points in a win over East Bay to help the Chargers improve to 17-4.

Allyssa Woodring, soccer, Palm Harbor University: The senior assisted on the Hurricanes’ first goal and scored two second-half goals in their 5-0 win over Plant in the Class 5A, District 7 final.


Male nominees

Duncan DeMuth, basketball, Seminole: The junior scored 14 points in a win over St. Petersburg and had 23 in a win over Palm Harbor University that helped the Warhawks clinch the No. 2 seed in the Class 8A, District 10 tournament.

Jimmy Eannel, basketball, Mitchell: The senior had a team-high 15 points, including three 3-pointers, in a 71-49 victory over Anclote. He also had 12 points in a win over Springstead on senior night.

Bailey Forsman, soccer, Berkeley Prep: The junior had a combined four goals this week, three coming in a 6-0 win over Shorecrest that extended the Buccaneers’ win streak to four.

Tarik McKelphin, basketball, Plant City: The senior scored 28 points in a win over Durant to become just the seventh at his school to top 1,000 career points. He is averaging 19.3 points.

Cross Meehan, basketball, Admiral Farragut: The senior captain had a team-high 23 points in a win over Calvary Christian that moved the Blue Jackets into second place in the Class 4A, District 4 standings.

Jack Nolting, soccer, Wiregrass Ranch: The junior had the winning goal in a a 1-0 victory over rival Sunlake. It marked the first loss of the season for the Seahawks and extended the Bulls’ win streak to four.
