HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Jan. 16-22



Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Jan. 16 through Friday, Jan. 22. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.

Female nominees

Lauren Brito, basketball, Sunlake: The senior scored 25 points in a 59-34 win over Anclote. Brito, the Seahawks’ leading scorer, was 5-for-9 from 3-point range and made 5-of-7 field goals.

Alexsia Brown, basketball, Armwood: The senior scored a team-high 20 points, including two 3-pointers, in the Hawks’ 38-36 victory against East Bay. Brown averages 10.8 points per game, second most on the team.

Lauren Evans, soccer, Newsome: The junior notched a hat trick as the Wolves romped 8-0 in the opening round of the Class 5A regionals. Newsome has owned Orlando Boone in recent playoff meetings.

Jenny Luna, soccer, Pasco: The sophomore scored three goals in a 5-1 win over Sunlake in a Class 3A region quarterfinal. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Luna scored the tying goal early in the second half. She also scored the Pirates’ third and fourth goals.

Yemiyah Morris, basketball, Lakewood: The junior scored 13 points to help lead Lakewood to a 51-43 win over Palm Harbor University on Friday in the Pinellas County Athletic Conference championship. She added five blocks and six rebounds.  

Allyssa Woodring, soccer, Palm Harbor University: In the Class 5A region quarterfinal vs. Bradenton Manatee, Woodring assisted on the Hurricanes’ first goal on a corner kick, then scored the second on a long 20-yard shot that sneaked into the upper left corner. PHU won 2-0.

Male nominees

Sergio Enciso, soccer, Palm Harbor University: The senior’s free kick tied the score in the Class 5A, District 7 final vs. Wiregrass Ranch. Then his assist in overtime lifted PHU to the 2-1 victory. Two days earlier, he had the lone goal in a 1-0 semifinal win over top-seeded Steinbrenner.

Brady Friedman, soccer, Mitchell: The senior notched what turned out to be a game-changing goal in a 4-1 win over Hillsborough in the Class 4A-8 championship. The win gave the Mustangs their first district title in six years.

Ben Hickson, soccer, Gaither: Hickson had two golden goals for the Cowboys in two games, including one in the 2-1 district championship victory against Bloomingdale. His first came in a 1-0 overtime victory against Brandon in the 4A-9 semifinals.

Trevon Michael, soccer, Sunlake: The junior forward’s 24th goal of the season proved to be the winner in a 2-1 victory over River Ridge in the Class 3A-8 championship game. It was the Seahawks’ fifth straight district title.

Trey Sibert, basketball, Tampa Prep: The sophomore forward scored three key baskets in the final minutes of the Terrapins’ game against Memphis Southwind in the ARS National Hoopfest at Berkeley Prep to lead Tampa Prep to a 63-60 victory. Sibert finished with 14 points.

Miguel Silva, soccer, East Lake: The senior scored on a header off a corner kick in the final two minutes of regulation to lift the Eagles to a 2-1 win over Seminole in the Class 4A-10 championship game.
