HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Jan. 23-29

Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Jan. 23 through Friday, Jan. 29. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.

Female nominees

Stephanie Brower, basketball, Wiregrass Ranch: The junior guard scored 15 points, including her 1,000th career point, in the Bulls’ 59-47 Class 7A-8 district championship victory against Freedom. It was Wiregrass Ranch’s first district title.

Olivia Downing, basketball, Bishop McLaughlin: The sophomore, had a school-record 24 rebounds in a 48-41 Class 3A, District 7 semifinal win over No. 2  seed Tampa Prep. The win assured the Hurricanes a spot in next week’s region tournament.

Kayli Houmard, basketball, Palm Harbor University: The sophomore scored 13 points and added eight rebounds to help the Hurricanes to a 58-50 win over Seminole in the Class 7A-10 district final. She helped spark a fourth-quarter comeback over the Warhawks.

Julia Lester, soccer, Academy of the Holy Names: The University of Florida commit had a goal and an assist in the Jaguars’ 3-0 Class 2A region final win against Sarasota Cardinal Mooney. AHN is in its first state final four.  

Briana Matthews, basketball, Strawberry Crest: The junior scored a team-high 18 points in Strawberry Crest’s 61-22 district final victory against Tampa Bay Tech. The win was the Chargers’ third straight district championship.

Mackenzie Nalven, soccer, East Lake: The Eagle goalkeeper came up big in the final seconds of East Lake’s 4-3 Class 4A region final win over Naples Gulf Coast. She made a diving save on a Gulf Coast free kick in the final seconds to preserve the lead. She also made a diving save in the 61st minute.

Male nominees

Joey Cancel, basketball, River Ridge: The senior point guard had 17 points in a win over rival Mitchell. The Royal Knights have won five straight and seven of the last eight entering next week’s Class 5A, District 8 tournament.  

Liam Dougherty-Howard, soccer, St. Petersburg Catholic: The junior had an assist and scored early in what turned out to be the game winner in a 3-0 win over Carrollwood Day in the Class A region quarterfinals.

Carey Nicholls, soccer, Gaither: Nicholls was a wall in the Cowboys’ 2-0 region quarterfinal win over Seminole. He made several key saves to preserve the shutout, especially in the second half when his team was down a player due to a red card.

Jeremy Oppenheimer, basketball, Zephyrhills: Pasco County’s top scorer had a season-high 33 points and 12 rebounds in a 64-49 win over Wiregrass Ranch. The Bulldogs are the top seed in the 5A-8 tournament.  

Serrel Smith, basketball, St. Petersburg: The sophomore had a team-high 19 points in the Green Devils’ win over Clearwater in the Pinellas County Athletic Conference championship game.

Caleb Young, basketball, Cambridge Christian: Young scored 33 points in a 75-68 win against Northside Christian, then had 20 points in a 61-56 overtime win against North Broward Prep. The sophomore averages a team-high 17.2 points per game.
