HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Jan. 28-Feb. 3

Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Jan. 28 through Friday, Feb. 3. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.

Female nominees

Emily Abdoney, soccer, Academy of the Holy Names: The sophomore scored the winning goal in the 48th minute in a 2-1 win over Clewiston. It was her first goal of the season after returning from a broken collar bone.

Pilar Eguino, soccer, Mitchell: The sophomore goalkeepr was huge in the Mustangs’ 1-0 penalty-kick win over Melbourne in the Class 4A region finals. She had 13 saves in regulation and made two saves in penalty kicks.

Ranyel Hernandez, basketball, King: The senior scored 16 points, all in the second half, to help the Lions win the Class 7A, District 7 title. She was 6-for-6 shooting in the half, including 4-for-4 on 3-pointers.

Seytia Hill, basketball, Weeki Wachee: Despite losing the district final to Crystal River, the sophomore had 21 points and 21 rebounds for the Hornets, who advanced to regionals for the first time.

Lexi Hiltunen, soccer, St. Petersburg: The freshman midfielder was in the right place at the right time in the Green Devils’ 1-0 win over Estero in the Class 4A region finals. She scored the winning goal in the second half when she collected a rebound and scored from 8 yards.

November Morton, basketball, Countryside: The junior point guard scored 24 points against Palm Harbor University to help the Cougars win the Class 8A, District 10 championship 57-47.

Male nominees

Bogdan Ciulei, soccer, Palm Harbor University: An assist machine, Ciulei did some scoring of his own with two goals in a 5-2 win over Sarasota Riverview in the Class 5A region quarterfinals.

Gilbert Delgado, soccer, Nature Coast: The senior headed in the winning goal to beat River Ridge 1-0 in overtime in the Class 3A region quarterfinals. That goal also tied Morgan Vraspir for the program’s all-time scoring record.

Tariq Michael, soccer, Sunlake: A proficient scorer, Michael’s 41st goal of the season proved to be the winner as the Seahawks survived a furious rally to beat Pasco 4-3 in the Class 3A region quarterfinals.

Benny Ortiz, soccer, Jesuit: The team’s leading scorer had two goals in a 4-0 win over Osceola in the Class 3A region quarterfinals. His second goal rounded out the scoring and allowed Jesuit to empty its bench in the second half.

Serrel Smith, basketball, St. Petersburg: The junior, who had to carry the team through the regular season, finished with a team-high 28 points to lead the Green Devils to a 68-42 win over Seminole in the Pinellas County Athletic Conference championship game.

Eric Ugarte, soccer, Plant City: Against Orlando Oak Ridge, Ugarte scored twice, including the winner in overtime in the Class 5A region quarterfinals. His winning goal was on a free kick from about 18 yards away.
