HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Jan. 7-13
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Jan. 7 through Jan. 13. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.
Samantha Epifanio, soccer, Land O’Lakes: Trailing 1-0 against rival Mitchell, the senior sparked a comeback with an assist on the tying goal and scoring the game-winner from 30 yards out for the Gators.
Julia Ingram, basketball, Palm Harbor University: The senior scored 30 points in a win over St. Petersburg to become the school’s all-time leader in career points with 1,751. She is averaging 25.1 points per game this season.
Kayla Langley, basketball, Nature Coast: The sophomore had 12 rebounds, 12 blocked shots and nine points in a 38-35 win over Citrus. She is averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds per game.
Taylor Polasky, basketball, Calvary Christian: The junior scored a team-high 21 points in a 68-36 win over Tampa Prep. The Warriors have won four straight, all by double digits.
Sophie Shrader, soccer, Newsome: In a matchup of unbeaten Class 5A teams, the sophomore scored twice as the Wolves downed Plant 4-1. The teams could meet again in regionals.
Jalyn Spurlin, basketball, Brandon: The sophomore had quite the back-to-back games. She scored 43 points in a win over Armwood, then followed that with a new career high, 44 points vs. Chamberlain.
Brennan Breuer, soccer, Mitchell: The sophomore is usually the one assisting on goals, with a team-high 13 assists for the 14-2-4 Mustangs. But in a 3-1 win over River Ridge, he also got in on the scoring with two goals.
Jake Brooks, soccer, Weeki Wachee: In two shutout wins this week over Fivay and Springstead, the junior goalkeeper notched 18 saves. He has eight shutouts this season, including three against the district rival Eagles.
Kevin Clayton, wrestling, East Bay: The senior won his weight class (195) at the Indians’ host tournament last weekend to improve to 27-0 on the season.
Deondrick Harper, basketball, Gibbs: The sophomore hit a pair of free throws in the final 2.1 seconds of regulation to lead the Gladiators to a 54-53 win over Seffner Christian in the St. Petersburg Shootout.
Ervin Ikanovic, soccer, Northeast: The senior scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Countryside that clinched the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A, District 10 tournament for the Vikings.
Stephonse Mack, basketball, Armwood: The junior had 25 points and five rebounds in a 77-72 win over King. Mack has scored 20 or more points in three of his past four games.
