HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for March 12-18
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, March 12 through Friday, March 18. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.
Brandy Ashmore, softball, Strawberry Crest: The junior was a combined 5-for-6 with two doubles in wins over Alonso and Hardee in the opening round of Sarasota’s Spring Slam tournament.
Rehaana Butt, tennis, Countryside: The junior the Pinellas County Athletic Conference individual championship, topping St. Petersburg’s Rena Upadhyay 8-4. Butt also teamed with Lenah Monosky to win the doubles title 8-0.
Taylor Holt, softball, Land O’Lakes: The Rollins commit was 3-for-4 in wins over Wiregrass Ranch and Hudson. The double she had against the Bulls was the 100th hit of her high school career.
Corynn Miner, softball, Admiral Farragut: In wins over St. Petersburg Catholic and Northside Christian, the Tampa signee allowed a combined one run on three hits and had 23 strikeouts. She also was impressive at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a triple and a home run.
Haley Morrell, softball, Academy of the Holy Names: The junior was a combined 6-for-7 with a double and triple in wins over district rivals Berkeley Prep and Tampa Catholic. She is hitting .531 this season.
Brittney Rodriguez, softball, Nature Coast: The senior went 4-for-7 with a combined three RBIs and four runs scored in wins over Citrus and Liberty in the opening round of Hernando’s Leopard Slam tournament.
Jonathan Gates, baseball, Nature Coast: The sophomore led the Sharks with three RBIs, including two doubles, and pitched a complete game, striking out seven, in an 11-1 win over Sunlake. Gates is hitting .558 with 28 RBIs, second most in the state.
Christian James, baseball, East Lake: The senior threw a complete-game six-hitter against nationally ranked Jesuit to help the Eagles to a 6-3 win. James had 10 strikeouts and two RBIs.
John Pinchman, baseball, Palm Harbor University: The senior right-hander scattered three hits and struck out five in a complete-game 3-0 shutout of Osceola. He did not allow a runner past first base. It was the first complete game for a Hurricane pitcher this season.
Carson Ragsdale, baseball, Bishop McLaughlin: Ragsdale went 2-for-2 with two walks and helped spark a seventh-inning rally to defeat Carrollwood Day 3-2. Ragsdale doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and later scored the tying run.
Ryan Savitt, Alonso, baseball: The sophomore had two RBIs in the Ravens’ 6-0 Saladino Tournament semifinal victory against Plant on Thursday. He was also named best defensive player of the tournament.
CJ Van Eyk, baseball, Steinbrenner: The junior right-hander threw 90 pitches in an 8-6 victory against Wharton on Tuesday in the Saladino Tournament, then he closed the game for the Warriors on Friday when they beat Alonso 6-4 in 10 innings to win the school’s first Saladino Tournament title. Van Eyk was named tournament MVP.
