HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for March 26-April 1
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, March 26 through Friday, April 1. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday
Kameron Aitken, softball, Wiregrass Ranch: The junior was 2-for-4 with a whopping five RBIs and a run scored in a 12-2 win over River Ridge. Aitken has 11 RBIs in her past four games.
Payton Andrews, tennis, Dixie Hollins: The sophomore won the Class 3A, District 10 No. 1 singles championship by defeating Boca Ciega’s Jessica Stefan 6-2, 3-6, 10-4. Andrews is the first Dixie Hollins player to qualify for the state tournament since 1968.
Jamila Cardwell, track, Sunlake: The distance specialist set personal and school records with wins in the 800 (2:26.94), 1,600 (5:23.79) and 3,200 (11:40.78) at the Sunshine Athletic Conference meet.
Sarah Huskey, softball, Osceola: The senior pitched a two-hit shutout and recorded six strikeouts in a 5-0 win over Mitchell that helped the Warriors exact revenge for a loss to their district rival earlier this season.
Ashley Osiason, tennis, Robinson: Osiason played a key role in helping the Knights to their first district championship. She battled back in her No. 2 singles final to defeat Abby Neal of Holy Names 2-6, 7-6, 10-7. She then teamed with Elliott Peterson to win No. 1 doubles.
Brianna Schwecke, softball, Sickles: The senior was a combined 4-for-6 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored in wins over Alonso and King. The Gryphons have won four straight.
Colton Bierly, baseball, Wesley Chapel: The sophomore threw a complete-game two-hitter in a 2-1 win over Anclote. Bierly, who has a 1.77 ERA, is one of the Wildcats’ top hitters with a .347 average and 10 RBIs.
Aaron Carey, tennis, Countryside: The senior won the Class 4A, District 7 No. 1 singles championship. Carey not only beat Plant’s Thomas Harmon in the final, but he had to come from behind to beat Steinbrenner’s Sebastian Rivera 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 in his semifinal.
Luke Drummond, baseball, King: The right-hander threw a no-hitter in an 8-0 win against Leto. The only thing that separated him from a perfect game was one walk, which was issued on a 3-2 pitch.
Tyler Frazee, tennis, Carrollwood Day: The sophomore won the No. 1 singles championship at the Class A, District 7 tournament. Frazee also teamed with eighth-grader Josh Adams to win the No. 1 doubles title.
Peter Litsky, tennis, Shorecrest: The senior will have a chance to defend his state championship. He won the Class A, District 9 singles championship. He also teamed with Luis Sarabia to win the No. 1 doubles title.
Jake Weber, baseball, Land O’Lakes: Weber had a two-run double in the Gators’ 5-4 victory against Mitchell, breaking open a game that was tied 2-2. Land O’Lakes’ win snapped Mitchell’s nine-game win streak.
