HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for May 6-12
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, May 6 through Friday, May 12. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.
Katie Barnett, track, Admiral Farragut: The Princeton signee, who also is the school’s valedictorian, repeated as state champion in the triple jump with a leap of 11.75 meters (38 feet, 6.75 inches) at the Class A state meet.
Bailey Hertenstein, track, Riverview: The area’s premier distance runner defended her Class 4A 1,600-meter title, winning in four minutes, 54.55 seconds. She also won the 3,200 in 10:30.89.
Alessa Sandusky, track, Gaither: The senior won the 100-meter hurdles at the Class 3A state meet in 14.55 seconds, just 0.1 seconds ahead of the runnerup.
Taylor Scott, softball, Palm Harbor University: The North Florida signee, who pitched shutouts in the region quarterfinals and semifinals, had five strikeouts in 5 â innings and had a double and two-run triple in a 6-1 victory over Kissimmee Osceola in the region finals.
Callie Turner, softball, Land O’Lakes: The sophomore, who already has committed to Tennessee, threw a two-hit shutout and recorded 15 strikeouts in a 2-0 victory over Springstead in the Class 6A region finals.
Kama Woodall, softball, Springstead: The N.C. State signee had a four-hit shutout against Belleview in the Class 6A region semifinals and had one of the Eagles’ two hits in a 2-0 loss to Land O’Lakes in the region final.
Collin Booten, baseball, Indian Rocks Christian: The senior left-hander threw a complete-game two-hitter in a 6-0 win over Fort Myers Evangelical Christian in the region semifinals. Booten struck out eight, walked one and faced only two batters over the minimum.
Vincent Brooks, baseball, Northeast: The senior third baseman was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored in the Vikings’ 8-0 region quarterfinal win over Brandon.
Owen Clanahan, track, Bishop McLaughlin: The senior struck gold twice in the sprints at the Class A state meet, winning the 100 in 11.03 seconds and the 200 in 21.96.
Mike Dominguez, baseball, Jefferson: The sophomore struck out 11 in six innings and allowed only two hits in a 3-1 win over Land O’Lakes Tuesday in the Class 6A region quarterfinals.
Carter Palasti, track, Gaither: The senior cleared 4.68 meters (15 feet, 4.25 inches) at the Class 3A state meet, giving him the gold medal.
Michael Wu, baseball, Sunlake: The senior infielder came up with the winning hit in a 3-1, eight-inning win at Braden River in the region quarterfinals. Wu hit a two-run double to rightfield.
