HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Nov. 12-18
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Nov. 12 through Friday, Nov. 18. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.
Kristina Budzban, soccer, King: The junior was a scoring machine in a pair of wins this week against Gaither and Tampa Bay Tech, scoring a whopping four goals in each victory for the 4-1 Lions. She leads the team with 13 goals in five games.
Abbey Duncan, swimming, Wesley Chapel: A former state champion, Duncan returned to the area after spending last season in Ohio and took second in both the 100 fly (55.31) and the 100 back (56.98) at the Class 2A state meet.
Emily Joseph, basketball, Northeast: The junior scored a total of 46 points in three wins, including 28 against Largo. She also had 15 rebounds, 16 assists and 20 steals in that span of games.
Nicole Stambo, diving, Berkeley Prep: The sophomore easily won gold at the Class A state meet, scoring 507.95 points, 50 ahead of the runnerup. Her best dive? Likely the reverse two-and-half tuck, which few in the state attempt.
Mackenzie Stumpf, swimming, Tarpon Springs: The senior capped off her high school career by winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.14) and 100 breast (1:02.60) at the Class 2A state meet. Those were the first individual golds for Stumpf, who finished second in both a year ago.
Ices Utegg, basketball, Fivay: The freshman had an impressive high school debut with 24 points, seven rebounds and four steals in a 62-26 season-opening win over Hudson.
Dane Frantzen, football, Plant: The senior quarterback avenged last year’s playoff loss to Lakeland. Twice in the second half of Friday’s region semifinal, Frantzen gave Plant the lead. His last score, from 1 yard out after a blocked punt, sealed the 25-21 win.
Xavier Jackson, football, East Lake: The senior, East Lake’s leading rusher for the season, gained 102 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 10 and 5 yards in the Eagles’ 20-14 win over Tampa Tech.
Ethan Long, swimming, Lakewood: The junior finished as the state runnerup in the 100 free (46.21) and 200 free (1:40.44) at the Class 2A meet.
Jabari Ramsey, swimming, Land O’Lakes: The senior won his second straight title in the 100 breast, winning his signature event in 56.86 at the Class 2A state meet.
Manden Smith, swimming, Gulf: The senior defended his title in the 50 free, winning his top event in 20.69 seconds at the Class 2A state meet.The sprinter also won the 100 free (45.75) after finishing second.
Gordon Stetson, football, Berkeley Prep: Stetson scored two touchdowns, on runs of 55 and 3 yards, in the Bucs’ 42-6 playoff win over Tampa Catholic, which had won the regular-season matchup 25-10.
