HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Oct. 10-16

17

October

Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Oct. 10 through Friday, Oct. 16. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.

Female nominees

Natalie Abernathy, cross country, Land O’Lakes: The freshman kicked into high gear toward the end to win the Pasco County Championships individual title in 19:26.2. Her time also helped the Gators to the team crown.

Jordyn Avers, cross country, Clearwater: The junior ran under 19 minutes for the first time in her career, taking the Pinellas County Athletic Conference title in 18:57.4. She led the entire race.

Madison Conway, swimming, Wiregrass Ranch: The senior set new times in the 100 butterfly (57.68) and 100 backstroke (59.09) at last weekend’s Sunshine Athletic Conference meet.

Alyssa Serino, golf, Steinbrenner:  The junior battled Gaither’s Laura Pasalodes for the 3A-11 title, edging her on the first playoff hole by one-putting for par. She finished the day with 77.

Bianca Sol Cruz, golf, Indian Rocks Christian: The sophomore picked the right time to put together her best round of the season. She shot 1-under 70 to win the individual championship at the Class A-14 district tournament. She was the only player under par in the tournament.

Latanna Stone, golf, Cambridge Christian: Stone shot by far the lowest round of the A-13 district tournament. Her 4-under 68 included five birdies, a bogey and 12 pars to help the Lancers win by five shots over Tampa Prep.

Male nominees

Michael Beausang, golf, East Lake: The freshman shot 72 at Seminole Lake Country Club to help lead his team to the 3A-12 district championship. His score was the lowest in the field by two shots.

Tyler Bismarck, golf, Nature Coast: The sophomore became the fourth straight Shark to win an individual district title, shooting 81 in the 2A-12 tournament. Bismarck, who has Type 1 diabetes, also helped NCT to the overall championship.

AJ Jimenez, cross country, Osceola: The senior won his second straight Pinellas County Athletic Conference title in 16 minutes, 13.9 seconds — eight seconds ahead of his time last year.

Dominic Moreno, cross country, Wesley Chapel: The junior edged Wiregrass Ranch’s Joey Salerno for the county title in 16:42.9. It was a season-best time for Moreno.

Kevin Sims, golf, Brooks DeBartolo: The senior shot 1-under 71 at the Class A-13 district tournament, the only golfer in the field to break par. It was his only under-par round of the high school season.

Cy Storlein, golf, Freedom: The sophomore shot 71 to win the 3A-10 district. His stellar play also helped the Patriots to the team title. Freedom beat Wharton for the first time this season in notching the victory.

Voting is now closed.
