HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Oct. 22-28
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Oct. 22 through Friday, Oct. 28. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.
Laurynn Harvard, swimming, Countryside: The senior won the 100 free (52.91) and the 100 breast (1:04.19) and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay (1:50.40) at the district meet.
Lauren Ianni, volleyball, Carrollwood Day: In the region semifinals, the sophomore had 31 digs, more than double anyone else on her team, in a 3-0 sweep of Orlando Christian Prep. She leads the Patriots with 222 this season.
Hannah McAuliffe, cross country, Lakewood: The junior took third with a time of 19 minutes, 45.64 seconds at a region meet.
Romina McCloskey, swimming, Land O’Lakes: The sophomore was part of two winning relays and won the 50 free (25.43) and 100 free (55.24) at the district meet.
McKenna Smith, swimming, Academy at the Lakes: The sprint specialist won the 50 free (24.84) and the 100 free (53.35) at districts.
Sabrina Vergara, swimming, Berkeley Prep: Vergara won the 200 free (2:01.34) and was on the winning 200 free relay (1:42.32) team at districts. Her performance helped the Buccaneers take the team title for a second straight season.
Devan Barrett, football, Tampa Catholic: Barrett had 29 carries for 314 yards and scored five touchdowns in the Crusaders’ 38-31 win over Lakeland Christian. The win secured the Class 3A, District 4 title.
Jamaine Derogene, football, Palm Harbor University: The senior rushed for 142 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 59-21 win over Riverview. Derogene has scored a combined eight touchdowns in the past two weeks.
Justin Locklear, football, Mitchell: The quarterback took over the starting job from Larry Dalla Betta (broken ankle) and threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-2 win over Land O’Lakes that secured the Mustangs spot in the three-way tiebreaker with Springstead and Sunlake on Monday.
Randy Morgan, football, Springstead: The junior took over the bulk of the rushing load and finished with 213 yards and scored three touchdowns (kick return, rushing and receiving) in the first half in a 48-18 win over Pasco.
Connell Murch, swimming, Lakewood: The Spartan was part of the winning 200 free relay and won the 100 backstroke in 56.65. Both victories helped Lakewood clinch its fourth district title in a row.
Jackson Suber, golf, Plant: The junior finished second at the Class 3A state tournament in Howey-in-the-Hills after shooting a two-round total of 72-71-143. He was instrumental in Plant winning the team title.
