HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Oct. 31-Nov. 6



Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Oct. 31 through Friday, Nov. 6. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday at

Female nominees

Tori Cannata, soccer, Land O’Lakes: The senior midfielder has scored 12 goals in five games, including nine in wins over Seminole, Wesley Chapel and Sunlake in the past week. The Gators are 5-0. 

Alyssa Lamoureux, golf, Seminole: The 5-foot sophomore shot 68-72—140 at the Class 3A state tournament in Howey-in-the-Hills, winning the state championship in a three-hole playoff. She parred all three playoff holes while her opponent bogeyed the third. She joins Brittany Lincicome (2002-03) as Seminole golfers to win a state title. 

Christin Rockway, swimming, Tampa Catholic: The sophomore won a state title in the 200 individual medley, finishing in two minutes, 39 seconds at the Class A meet. She also took fifth in the 100 fly in 55.67.

Bailey Sassatelli, volleyball, Mitchell: The senior, who is second on the team in kills (146) this season, converted four of her six attempts to help the Mustangs rebound from a shaky start to end up sweeping New Smyrna Beach in three games and advance to the Class 6A state semifinals. 

Mikayla Thibeault, soccer, Dixie Hollins: The sophomore scored two goals in a 3-0 win over Boca Ciega on Thursday for the 5-0 Rebels.

Camryn Vogler, volleyball, Plant: The freshman outside hitter had 12 kills in the Panthers’ 3-2 come-from-behind victory against Lake Nona in the region final. That included three kills and an ace down the stretch in the decisive fifth set. 

Male nominees

Van Cates, swimming, Tampa Prep: The junior had an impressive performance at the Class A state meet, finishing second in the 200 IM (1:51.26), third in the 100 back (50.22) and swimming a leg on the third-place 200 free relay (1:26.03).

Justin Hall, football, Sunlake: The quarterback orchestrated a 60-yard touchdown drive with 30 seconds remaining to beat previously unbeaten River Ridge 14-13. He completed passes of 24 and 21 yards on the drive before hitting Cris Galdos on a 13-yard TD strike to cap the comeback. 

Ryan Hicks, golf, Countryside: Hicks shot 3-under 69 in the second round of the Class 3A state tournament in Howey-in-the-Hills. He had the second-lowest round of the day and improved 10 shots from his opening round. He jumped from 33rd to tied for fifth. 

Xavier Jackson, football, East Lake: Jackson had 19 carries for 192 yards and four touchdowns in the Eagles’ 45-21 win over Clearwater. He had touchdown runs of 11, 27, 22 and 36 yards. Jackson also scored the only touchdown in a 7-3 win over Pinellas Park in Monday’s tiebreaker to clinch a playoff spot. 

Jabari Ramsey, swimming, Land O’Lakes: The sophomore finished first in the 100 breast (59.34), second in the 100 fly (54.42) and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay (1:42.98) at the Class 2A, Region 3 swim meet.  

Jackson Suber, golf, Plant: The sophomore followed his opening-round 75 with 2-under 70 at the final round of the Class 3A  state tournament and finished second overall with a 145. He had five birdies on his final nine holes.
