HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Oct. 8-14

Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Oct. 8 through Friday, Oct. 14. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.

Female nominees

Abbey Duncan, swimming, Wesley Chapel: The senior, who moved back to the area this year, won the 100 fly (57.76) and 100 back (57.12) at the Sunshine Athletic Conference meet, setting records in both events.

Chloe Grimme, swimming, Sunlake: The sprinter won multiple titles at the Sunshine Athletic Conference meet, finishing first in the 50 free (24.51) and 100 free (54.12). She also anchored the winning 200 medley relay (2:00.34).

Madison Heideman, golf, Osceola: The junior shot 73 to win the individual title and led the Warriors to the Class 2A, District 16 team title. She birdied the last two holes to win by three strokes.

Meredith Kiernan, golf, St. Petersburg: The sophomore shot 74, six strokes lower than her previous career best, to win individual honors at the Class 3A, District 12 tournament and lead the Green Devils to the team title.

K.C. Montgomery, golf, Sickles: The junior was dominant at the Class 3A, District 11 meet, winning top honors with 78, 13 strokes ahead of her next closest competitor.

Ashley Zagers, golf, Cambridge Christian: Zagers shot even-par 72 at Westchase Golf Club to win the Class A, District 13 championship by one shot over teammate Latanna Stone.

Male nominees

Griffin Alstott, football, Northside Christian: The Purdue commit threw for 317 yards and five touchdowns in a 47-0 win over Indian Rocks Christian. He also ran for a touchdown.

Demetrius Barry, football, Springstead: Barry rushed for 299 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 76 and 66 yards in the Eagles’ 42-10 win over district foe Land O’Lakes.

Andrew Cunningham, football, Cambridge Christian: The junior running back had 244 yards on 17 carries and scored four touchdowns in a 49-17 win over North Florida Christian, a consistent playoff team that won the Class 2A state title in 2011.

Malik Davis, football, Jesuit: The senior running back had one big half, setting two county records in the process. He finished with 214 yards against Robinson, which gave him 5,784 for his career, Hillsborough County’s all-time record. He also set the county record for career rushing touchdowns with 71.

Peter Jensen, golf, Largo: The sophomore, shot a 1 under 71 at the Class 2A, District 16 tournament at Belleview Biltmore on Tuesday. He was the only player in the field to shoot under par.

Alex Normandia, cross country, Land O’Lakes: The junior was the individual champion at the Sunshine Athletic Conference meet in 16 minutes, 47.50 seconds. He finished 15 seconds ahead of his closest competitor and was the only Gator in the top 10.
