HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Sept. 24-30
Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Sept. 24 through Friday, Sept. 30. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.
Natalie Abernathy, cross country, Land O’Lakes: The sophomore took third (18:55.80) in the elite race at the North Port Invitational, finishing behind Wharton’s Rania Samhouri and Riverview’s Bailey Hertenstein.
Sarah Asbury, volleyball, Weeki Wachee: In three matches, all wins, at last weekend’s Fivay Invitational, the senior averaged 23 assists per match. Her 423 assists for the season rank her among the top 25 in the state.
Cassie Highsmith, cross country, Plant City: The junior was third in the large school race at the Flrunners Invitational with a time of 20 minutes, 20.17 seconds. She helped the Raiders place second overall.
Randi Kiser, swimming, Countryside: At last weekend’s Pinellas County Athletic Conference meet, the senior won the 200 free (1:53.10) and 100 fly (58.12) and swam legs on the winning 200 medley relay (1:49.43) and 400 free relay (3:36.29).
Olivia Rovin, cross country, Shorecrest: The senior won the Mitchell Invitational last weekend with a time of 20 minutes, 48.10 seconds, 16 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
Camila Vazquez, volleyball, Newsome: The junior had a solid week, finishing with an average of seven kills and three blocks in four games as she helped the Wolves go 3-1.
Robert Cecil, swimming, Berkeley Prep: The sprinting specialist won the 100 free (46.4) and the 200 free (1:41.1) at the Woodson Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, a meet that featured private school powerhouses such as Jacksonville Bolles and Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest.
Robby Eisch, golf, Plant: Eisch shot 6-under 65 to win the Green Devil Invitational at Vinoy Golf Club. Eisch had seven birdies and a bogie to win by four shots. His score was two shots off the course record.
Mychael Hamilton, football, Mitchell: Hamilton gained 200 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Mustangs’ 31-7 win over Pasco. His final carry was a 47-yard touchdown.
John Jessup, cross country, Gulf: The sophomore took individual honors at the Mitchell Invitational, finishing first with a time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds.
Matt Perenich, golf, Palm Harbor University: Perenich shot a career-low 70 to help the Hurricanes win the Sebring Invitational at the Sun N’Lakes Turtle Run Course.
Sam Thompson, football, Boca Ciega: The receiver/defensive back picked off three passes and had eight receptions for 87 yards and three touchdowns on offense to lead the Pirates in a 26-6 win over Largo.
