Nature Coast RB DeShawn Smith named state's Mr. Football
Nature Coast record-setting running back DeShawn Smith was named the Florida Dairy Farmers' Mr. Football, an award given to the state’s top player regardless of classification.
“It’s a pretty big honor,” Smith said. “It’s crazy that I won it.”
Smith turned in some eye-popping statistics this season. He led the nation in rushing yards with 3,715 and overall touchdowns with 67. His 60 rushing touchdowns set the state record and his overall touchdown total ranks third all-time nationally in a single season.
Smith also led the Sharks to their first undefeated regular season and first two playoff wins. Nature Coast’s season ended with a 40-28 loss to Green Cove Clay in the Class 5A region final.
Those numbers made Smith the overwhelming choice for the award. He received 15 of 21 first-place votes. Smith becomes just the fourth area player to win since it started in 1992. The other area winners were Robinson’s Zain Gilmore (1997), Plant’s Robert Marve (2006) and Jefferson’s Quintin Williams (2010).
Cambridge Christian’s Bob Dare was named the Class 2A coach of the year and Armwood’s Sean Callahan was named the Class 6A coach of the year.
