Region soccer: Land O'Lakes 3, Wesley Chapel 0
WESLEY CHAPEL — Land O’Lakes took another step in its quest to return to the state final four with Tuesday night’s 3-0 win in a Class 3A region semifinal, ending Wesley Chapel’s record-setting season in the process.
The Gators (20-2-2) were state semifinalists last season while the Wildcats (16-5-2) set a school record for wins this season and made their first-ever region semifinal appearance.
“We made history this season,” said Michelle Clark, a former Land O’Lakes goalkeeper (class of 1998). “We’re a force now. We’re not thought of as an easy win now.”
“They had a good season,” said Vicky King, who coached Clark at Land O’Lakes.
Land O’Lakes' scoring leader Sydny Nasello had two goals and an assist with goalkeeper Hannah Young notching her team-leading seventh shutout in a balanced effort. Nasello has 16 goals and 42 points.
“We wanted the shutout, but we wanted to win and play with confidence,” King said. “The defense played strong and Hannah did good.”
“It’s exciting to not have any goals on us and to have a win,” said Young, who missed part of the season with a broken left wrist and played her fifth game since returning to the lineup.
The Gators got on the scoreboard quickly by scoring in the second minute of the game. Nasello took a through ball from Devyn Cabral at the top of the penalty box and kicked the ball past Wesley Chapel keeper Samantha Gasbarro. In the 17th minute, Nasello served the ball to Morghan Craven, who scored her fifth goal of the season.
The final score came in the 53rd minute, with Nasello corralling a crossing pass from Daniella Vasquez and looping a 30-foot shot just under the crossbar and over the outstretched hands of Gasbarro.
