Region soccer: St. Petersburg 3, King 0
ST. PETERSBURG – Alexis Hiltunen scored two first-half goals to pace St. Petersburg to a 3-0 win against King in a Class 4A region quarterfinal on Thursday.
St. Petersburg (17-2) faces Bloomingdale, a 2-1 winner against Countryside, in the region semifinals.
The Green Devils dominated possession for much of the first half and generated several scoring opportunities that were turned away by some stellar goalkeeping from Hannah Cardozo. With seven minutes remaining in the half, Caroline DeWitt had a one-on-one opportunity but Cardozo made a save.
Eventually Hiltunen broke through with a slow roller that beat Cardozo with 4:39 remaining in the half.
Hiltunen came through again with five seconds remaining in the half when she scored on a header from inside the box to give the Green Devils a 2-0 halftime lead.
King struggled to generate much of an attack on offense and its best chance came early in the second half when Kristina Budzban was able to get behind the defense on a long ball but Green Devils goalkeeper Angeline Friel made the save.
Alexa Goldberg put the game out of reach with her goal with 17:41 remaining in the game.
Hiltunen had several opportunities for the hat trick in the final five minutes of the game but each time Cardozo was up for the challenge. With less than two minutes left Hiltunen beat Cardozo to a ball but the goalkeeper made a terrific leg save to deny her one last time.
