Robinson gym named after Herman Valdes
With family in tow, 76-year-old Herman Valdes returned Friday evening to the site of some of his most glorious triumphs.
Only this time, the occasion was a glorious tribute.
Valdes, who won 235 games in a dozen seasons (1970-82) as Robinson boys basketball coach, had the Port Tampa school's gym named in his honor. Among the 100 or so friends, family members and former players in attendance was all-time USF scoring leader Charlie Bradley, who led Valdes' 1981 Knights team to a No. 1 state ranking.
A father of three girls (with five grandchildren and two great-grandkids) Valdes totaled nearly 600 boys victories in a tenure that included 12 seasons at Bayshore Christian.
He also led Robinson's volleyball team to the Class 4A state title in 1978, and briefly coached the Knights girls in the early 2000s. His administrative career included several years as principal at nearby Monroe Middle School.
