Kama Woodall didn't let flu-like symptoms stop her during the Hernando Leopard Slam.

Springstead won Hernando’s Leopard Slam softball tournament over the weekend, beating a familiar rival, Nature Coast, 1-0 in the championship game.

Kama Woodall and Kayla Cruz combined to win all four games in the tournament, three via shutout.

“It’s a nice luxury having two quality pitchers like that,” Eagles coach Craig Swartout said. “It’s like having a BMW and a Mercedes.”

Woodall battled through flu-like symptoms to blank Bellaire (Texas) in the semifinals and the Sharks in the final. She had a combined 19 strikeouts in those games and allowed just six hits.

“Kama just took her game to another level,” Swartout said. “She really just gutted it out. It was all adrenaline. I think she was throwing harder in the seventh inning of the championship game than she was in the first game.”

Abby Oliver had the winning hit in the final, a double that brought home Emily Kolwicz in the fifth inning.

The win over Nature Coast helped Springstead avenge its only loss of the season. The rivals meet again Tuesday night.

“I don’t think the girls cared who we played, just as long as we won the tournament,” Swartout said. “I guess it was a little added bonus that it came against Nature Coast. I don’t if the rivalry could more intense. The records do not matter. We could both be 0-15 and the intensity would still be there.”
