State golf: Cambridge Christian's Latanna Stone in Class A contention
After the first round of the Class A girls state tournament in Howey-in-the-Hills, Cambridge Christian’s Latanna Stone was in fifth place after shooting 1-under 71 on the Mission Inn and Resort’s Las Colinas Course. Stone was three shots behind leader Zihuan Zhou of Lake Mary Prep.
Tampa Prep’s Lilly Berry was also in the top 10. Berry shot 1-over 73 to tie for ninth.
As a team, Cambridge Christian was fifth with a score of 333, and Tampa Prep was tied for 10th (355) with Lake Mary Prep in the lead with a score of 285.
Aside from Stone, Ashley Zagers also helped out with 2-over 74 to tie for for 16th. Julie Zhang of Tampa Prep shot 75 (19th overall) to round out locals in the top 20.
In the boys tournament, both Clearwater Central Catholic and Calvary Christian have some work to do. The Marauders were seventh after shooting 324 on the Mission Inn and Resort’s El Campeon Course. Calvary Christian was 12th in the 16-team field after shooting 343. Windermere Prep led after Day 1 with 309.
CCC freshman Thomas Salanito led all local players after shooting 3-over 75. He was tied for seventh. Teammate Clark Lea wasn’t far behind, shooting 5-over 77 to tie for 11th.
