State golf: Mitchell's Nick Gabrelcik top local finisher in 2A
On what was clearly a tough day to score, Mitchell freshman Nick Gabrelcik fell down the leaderboard in Wednesday’s second round of the Class 2A state tournament in Howey-in-the-Hills.
Gabrelcik shot 10-over 82 on the Mission Inn and Resort’s El Campeon course and finished with a two-day total of 73-82--155, good to tie for 13th. He had the best finish of any local player at the tournament.
Junior Cody Carroll of Middleburg shot even-par 144 and defeated junior Ignacio Arcaya of Orlando Bishop Moore in a playoff to win the individual championship. Arcaya shot a second-round 2-under 70, the only round under par in the 95-player field.
Freshman Panormitis Karatzas of Tarpon Springs shot 83 on Wednesday and finished 20th at 159. Senior Travis Wells of Sunlake finished tied for 21st with 160.
In the team competition, Jesuit shot a second-day total of 320, 19 shots better than the first round, and finished tied for fourth in the 16-team field with a score of 659. Junior Max White shot the Tigers’ low round of the day, 7-over 79.
Mitchell shot 704 and finished 11th. Nature Coast was 14th with a 781.
American Heritage won the team title with a score of 604.
On the girls side, Osceola junior Madison Heideman was the highest local finisher. She shot a second-round 83 on the Las Colinas course and finished 18th with a two-round total of 161. Senior Kendall Griffin of Sebring won the individual championship with a 4-under 140. She shot 4-under 68 on Wednesday.
Nature Coast finished 12th with a score of 804. Junior Skylar Muscianese had the Sharks’ low round at 84. Land O’Lakes was 13th with an 806. King was 15th with an 812.
Fort Lauderdale Archbishop McCarthy was first with a score of 628.
