Tampa Bay's off and running again
Last season was the year of the running back with the bay area having four of the top five leading rushers in the state.
This season it is much of the same with the area boasting two of the top three leading rushers. Central’s De’Vonta Smith headlines that list. The senior, who rushed for a Hernando County-record 491 yards in last week’s win over Weeki Wachee, leads the state with 1,133 yards.
Northeast’s Shaquan Johnson is third in the state with 933 yards. Both backs also lead the state in rushing touchdowns (Johnson 15, Smith 14).
What makes their totals even more impressive is that they each have done it in four games, one fewer than two of the other top four backs in the state.
