Two Pinellas quarterbacks will be busy this summer
Dixie Hollins senior quarterback Dakovin Cann, Jr. attended Sunday’s Strong Mind Strong Body satellite camp at Jefferson High School to not only prepare for his final season, but also to be seen by the numerous college coaches in attendance. Cann, 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, was one of 400 players attending the camp. After throwing for 1,454 yards last season, he is hoping to surpass 2,000 yards this season and help the Rebels have a winning season. They were 1-9 last season.
“There’s a lot of talent out here,’’ Cann said. “I love competing against players like this. When I am at these camps I don’t get nervous. I just play my own game and work on improving.’’
This was Cann’s first satellite camp of the summer. He threw several tight spirals in the afternoon’s one-on-one passing drills. He plans on attending camps at Central Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida International and perhaps Miami throughout the summer.
While Cann is preparing for his final season as starter, Indian Rocks Christian sophomore quarterback Andrew Roberts is preparing for his first. He will take over for Garrett Ross-Johnson after serving as the backup last season.
With little experience at running back, Roberts, 5-foot-11, 160 pounds, will be counted on to throw the ball this season. He said he wants to make sure he’s as ready as possible when the season begins, which is why he jumped at the chance to participate in Sunday’s camp.
“I’ve been waiting for this (season),’’ Roberts said. “Luckily, I didn’t have to wait very long. We’re looking to open it up a little bit. This is a great opportunity for me so I want to be as prepared as I can.’’
