Wiregrass Ranch sweeps team titles at SAC cross country meet
Wiregrass Ranch swept the overall boys and girls team titles at the Sunshine Athletic Conference cross country meet.
The Bulls boys team won last year’s title by three points over Land O’Lakes. This time, there were no close calls. Wiregrass Ranch defended its title with 45 points, 36 ahead of Sunlake.
Depth played a key role for the Bulls, who did not have a runner place among the top three. Wiregrass Ranch had six runners place in the top 17. Joseph Salerno led the Bulls, finishing fourth in 17 minutes, 18.50 seconds.
Land O’Lakes Alex Normandia won the boys race in 16:47.50, followed by Gulf’s John Jessup (17:02.50) and Wesley Chapel’s Dominic Moreno (17:16.40), who was the defending champion.
In the girls race, Wiregrass Ranch beat Land O’Lakes 43-55.
The Gators’ Natalie Abernathy, the defending champion, won again in 19:45.10, 19 seconds ahead of teammate Estefania Acosta.
Sunlake’s Jamila Cardwell was third in 21:04.20.
The Bulls had five runners who placed in the top 11, including four who finished 8-11. Julia Blankenbaker was highest place-winner for Wiregrass Ranch, finishing fifth in 21:33.10.
