Benedict Cumberbatch calls cops on creepy fan

Police have told a woman who continues to show up at the London home of Benedict Cumberbatch that she is forbidden from contacting the actor.

The woman, thought to be an obsessed fan, has been leaving red ribbons on Cumberbatch’s property. One was tied to the Sherlock star’s car, another to the window of his home.

The ribbons are assumed to be a reference to the original Sherlock Holmes novel. In A Study In Scarlet, Dr. John Watson uses red ribbon to tie his case files together. Holmes also tells Watson in a speech, “There’s the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, isolate it, and expose every inch of it.”

Cumberbatch, a new husband and father, called Metropolitan Police, who issued a Police Information Notice over harassment, forbidding the woman from contacting Cumberbatch.

According to the Mirror, the 39-year-old actor also has beefed up security at the London theater where he is starring in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Said a source of the fans who refer to themselves as Cumberbitches: “Benedict is used to people mobbing him wherever he goes and he’s a good sport about it. But this individual has taken things to the next level and there was no option but to pursue official action. Turning up at professional events is one thing, but arriving uninvited at the family home is quite another. It might be that she thinks it’s harmless, but it does feel a bit sinister. Leaving red ribbons is obviously a bit of a game, but it does feel quite dark.”

Cumberbatch addressed the issue of creepers back in 2012, telling PA, “There is some obsessive behavior, which is quite worrying. I worry for them, not for me. I’m still very sensitive and wary of people recognizing me. The only thing that really annoys me is people trying to surreptitiously take a photo on their phone without asking. I feel it’s cowardly and a bit pathetic. Just ask me if you really want me to have a photograph with you.”

Now excuse me while I delete that 2014 Instagram I lovingly captioned, “Creepy selfie with Dannie D.
