Akon pleads guilty in tossing kid off stage
Hip-hop star Akon has pleaded guilty to harassment (in order to strike a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a minor) for picking up a teenage boy and giving him the ol' heave-ho off the stage at an upstate New York concert last year.
It was a stupid thing to do in the first place, but seeing as the whole thing was caught on video (above), maybe he figured this was the best way to make it all go away. In turn Akon -- real name Aliaune Thiam -- gets a tiny slap: He will serve no jail time as long as he performs 65 hours of community service and pays a $250 fine, AP says.
The story goes that someone in the crowd threw something at Akon on stage in June 2007. He asked the crowd who did it, and security sent up young Anthony Smith, now 16. That's when Akon flung him into the audience.
After the plea, Akon shook hands with Anthony and apologized to him and his parents. It doesn't say anything about the girl who allegedly got a concussion by being hit by Anthony's airborne body. So now that we've all learned that throwing things is wrong, can we move on now?
