Alec Baldwin skipped Emmys for Tony Bennett's birthday party
Rumor has it Alec Baldwin decided to skip Sunday night's Emmys because producers cut a joke out of a skit he was going to open the show with, but like most rumors, that's not the truth. No, Alec had to go to Tony Bennett's 85th birthday party in New York, instead. Alec really made out better on that deal, we think.
"I didn't skip the Emmys because of that," the 30 Rock star said, according to People. "I skipped the Emmys because of this – because I wanted to be here. The Emmys have been in August for the last several years, but they moved to this date and I'd already committed to this."
Gums had been flapping that a Baldwin joke about the News of the World phone hacking scandal, in which Rupert Murdoch was listening in to a phone conversation, was pulled by Fox, which was broadcasting the Emmys. Baldwin confirmed that is indeed why he quit the skit: "(Fox) had asked me to do a sketch for them," Baldwin said. "I flew out there (to Los Angeles). I did the sketch, and it was shot. They cut out something that I thought was the funniest part. I guess it was offensive to them." But hey, Tony throws a heck of a party, anyway.
