Alex Trebek injures legs chasing hotel burglar
Stalwart Jeopardy host Alex Trebek was forced onto crutches during hosting duties at Google HQ in Mountain View, Calif., on Wednesday, explaining his injury as a freak accident while chasing a burglar. We'll take "Improbable Explanations for $800."
Trebek, who celebrated his 71st birthday last Friday, says he was loping after the alleged thief at his San Francisco hotel at 2:30 in the morning when his Achilles tendon snapped. OUCH! To add injury to injury, when he fell, he hurt his other leg, the Bay Area's KGO-TV news says.
NBC's website added that he awoke to find a woman rifling through his things, so he pulled on his underwear before chasing her down the hall. He called security, who caught the suspect and recovered everything but some cash and Alex's bracelet, which was a gift from his mother. He insisted he was okay -- he expects to be in a cast six weeks -- and went on to host the National Geographic World Championship.
That contest had Alex asking groups of students about physical, cultural and economic geography, the ABC affiliate says. Russia beat out Chinese Taipei and Canada for the win, since the U.S. was bounced out in fourth place. Well of course -- all the American students are used to Googling the answer.
