'American Gladiators' to lower your IQ again
Whenever The Juice* got bored with pro wrestling in the years between 1989 and 1996, we could rest easy knowing we could always watch professional bodybuilders beat the tar out of Joe Normal on American Gladiators.
And while time (and emotional maturation) eventually claimed this ridiculous fare, we were secretly glad it was gone, since its low production values and cheesy outfits couldn’t match the low production values and cheesy outfits of the WWF.
But lo, Variety reports American Gladiators is headed to NBC as a midseason program, although the format is still up in the air. The trade pub does say producers hope to focus more on the gladiators and their opponents’ backstories, like the U.K. version did.
“We’ve been circling around this property for a long time now,” said Craig Plestis, executive VP of alternative programming, development and specials at NBC Entertainment. “It’s truly what’s not in the TV landscape right now. While everyone’s zigging, I’m attracted to doing a zag.” We’re not sure if this is good news, but the decision almost certainly involved zig-zags.
