'America's Got Talent' hopeful Timothy Michael Poe apologizes for getting facts wrong, blames injuries
America's Got Talent hopeful Timothy Michael Poe is working hard to explain why his backstory during an audition for the show doesn't seem to match the facts, saying his brain injury has left him unable to recall the true version of events. Or pick himself out of a photograph, apparently.
"It may not have happened exactly like I said it did," Poe told the New York Post after numerous reports questioned his assertion he was injured with a rocket-propelled grenade while deployed in Afghanistan in the Army. "I really do not remember a lot of things since the accident. I remember a blast going off by my head and being in Afghanistan and telling one of the sergeants. It is like a dream ... I can't remember things exactly how it happened."
The singer told Howard Stern, Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne in an audition shown last Monday he broke his back and suffered a brain injury, but the Minnesota National Guard can't confirm such an injury and said he was deployed in Afghanistan for only one month in 2009. The Guard also said he couldn't have been shot in the leg in Iraq, because his unit was never deployed there.
Also disputed is his claim he never sang before the attack, which the 35-year-old admitted was incorrect. "I was in a band," he said. "But it was before the accident. And at the time of AGT, when the judges asked, before I could even think about answering, my words had already came out.
Poe gave the Post what appeared to be discharge papers addressed to Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas that note he was injured in the line of duty, but the injury is not specified.
"I would like to take the time to tell the the American people how truly sorry I am that they had to endure the incomplete facts," Poe said. "I understand how they feel."
TMZ says producers for the show will be editing his appearances in future shows, and may ditch him altogether, which may be just fine with the judges.
"I was blown away that I was totally taken in," Mandel told the site. "I'm really angry with the guy."
