Amy Winehouse was trying to adopt a 10-year-old girl from St. Lucia (maybe)

tbd-amywinehouse080211.jpgAmy Winehouse was preparing to adopt a 10-year-old girl from St. Lucia before she died, according to a report in the U.K.'s Mirror. The singer had apparently started the process with lawyers before she died of unknown causes July 23.

"Amy was already my mother," 10-year-old Dannika Augustine told the tabloid. "I would call her mum and she would call me her daughter. She took care of me, and we had fun together. I loved her and she loved me."

Winehouse met the girl while on a trip to the Caribbean island in 2009, after getting to know her grandmother, 57-year-old Marjorie Lambert. Lambert ran a beach bar next to the Cotton Bay Village Resort, where Amy spent most of the past three years in a $3,000 per night villa (although the most expensive one we could find was a bargain at only about $1,400 a day). Dannika was not an orphan, the paper reports, but her 31-year-old mother, Nadia Germaine, was so poor she was willing to let Winehouse adopt her little girl to help Dannika's chances in life.

"Amy loved Dannika with all her heart," Lambert said. "I don't know why Amy took to Dannika above all the other children on the island, but from the moment they met they were inseparable. They would spend all day playing, horse-riding and walking up and down the beach hand-in-hand. Amy used to beg me: 'I want to adopt Dannika. I want to take her to England.' She was prepared to move to St Lucia to be her full-time mum."

It's suspicious that all the people the Mirror interviewed are related to the girl, so we call shenanigans. In fact, her rep told X17 the story was so much bollocks. "It's not true. I think (Amy) might have met her in St. Lucia, but she was in no way about to adopt her."

Winehouse was allegedly planning a trip to St. Lucia soon, but if drug fixer Tony Azzopardi is telling the truth to London police, she was too busy buying drugs the night before she died to be very concerned about adopting a 10-year-old.
