Anne Hathaway starved herself for 'Les Miserables'
As if Anne Hathaway's pixie cut for Les Miserables wasn't a big enough shock, the actress tells Vogue she lost 25 pounds for her role as Fantine, just to get that extra-emaciated look going. Let's see Robert De Niro do that.
The 30-year-old said she initially lost 10 pounds to get a "gossamer quality" for her character, but since Fantine prostitutes herself and selfs her hair and teeth to care for her daughter Cosette while wasting away from tuberculosis, Hathaway decided she needed to go a bit further. She took two weeks off and lost 15 more pounds by only eating to squares of dried oatmeal paste each day.
"I had to be obsessive about it — the idea was to look near death," she said. "Looking back on the whole experience — and I don’t judge it in any way — it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that's who Fantine is anyway."
When shooting was over Fantine was stuck with her in plenty of ways she wasn't expecting. "I was in such a state of deprivation — physical and emotional. When I got home, I couldn't react to the chaos of the world without being overwhelmed," she aid. "It took me weeks till I felt like myself again."
We can't wait to hear how Matthew McConaughey feels after losing tons of weight to play a man dying of AIDS in The Dallas Buyers Club. He probably did a lot worse than eat oatmeal squares.
