'Baywatch' latest remake on altar of bad taste

Baywatch Was yesterday's news that T.J. Hooker is being remade into a movie not enough proof that there are truly no new ideas in Hollywood? That's good, since Variety now says Baywatch is getting that treatment. As a comedy. Because being unintentionally hilarious wasn't enough.

Paramount Pictures is letting Jeremy Garelick rewrite and direct the project, since he proved himself with an uncredited rewrite of The Hangover and a script for a Todd Phillips project called Murray at Large in the works. But why the tone shift?

"It felt like the template to do a movie that was similar to Stripes and Police Academy, the comedies I loved growing up," Garelick said. "Rather than trying to pitch the tone, I figured it would be easier to write the first act to convey who these characters were."

Great, he even frames his storyline behind two other flicks that are ripe for butchering. His plan: Two unlikely lifeguards make it in the big world of buff bodyguards on a California beach. Sounds more like a Saturday Night Live sketch to us.
