Benicio Del Toro may be joining 'Star Trek 2' as villain
In celebrity news that doesn't make us want to fling ourselves from a multi-story building, word around the space campfire is that J.J. Abrams is looking for a heavy hitter to play the villain in his long-awaited sequel to the rebooted Star Trek franchise. Just imagine: Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhuru, Simon Pegg as Scotty -- and Benicio Del Toro as ... an as-yet-unnamed villain. Hey, that's good enough for us.
Variety says Del Toro has met with Abrams and an offer was forthcoming, but there were absolutely no details beyond that, like what the villain is named or what his backstory is. The trade paper says Del Toro doesn't even know, since Abrams kept it a secret to preserve some mystery about the sequel. Smart.
Abrams will be directing the sequel, which is supposed to start production early next year. Del Toro has to finish shooting Savages, but after that, who knows? Just please don't recycle the basic plot of The Wrath of Khan again, J.J.
