Brett Ratner apologizes for offending gays, Olivia Munn, quits Oscars job
Director Brett Ratner has quit his job producing the next Academy Awards telecast after his use of a homophobic slur in an interview at an opening-night screening of his movie Tower Heist drew the ire of plenty of rights groups. Plus: The weekend box office for a movie starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller just wasn't that good.
"He did the right thing for the Academy and for himself," Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak told Variety. Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent."
On Friday, when asked if he and his cast rehearsed before a scene, Ratner said "Rehearsal is for fags." GLAAD was all over him soon after, prompting Ratner to release the following statement, Entertainment Weekly reports: "I apologize for any offense my remarks caused. It was a dumb way of expressing myself. Everyone who knows me knows that I don't have a prejudiced bone in my body. But as a storyteller I should have been much more thoughtful about the power of language and my choice of words." Ah, the old, "I'm sorry if you were offended" apology, which isn't really an apology.
GLAAD responded with its own statement, noting, "This apology is a good start, but we’re working with Ratner's people for more action, to clearly send a message to Hollywood that the anti-gay slurs used by bullies and bigots have no place in the world of entertainment, or anywhere else."
Sherak had initally defeded Ratner, saying "this won’t and can't happen again." Now he won't have to worry about it.
All this happened after a big row in which he made some untoward remarks about Olivia Munn's sexuality on her former program, G4's Attack of the Show! last week, saying he had sex with her and promptly forgot about her until she wrote about him in her new book. Unfortunately, that wasn't him she was writing about, and they never touched each other, which Ratner has since admitted. Wow, you really can make a job out of embarrassing yourself daily.
