British women hate Orcs, love Gollum

Tbdgollum051107Orcs are on the prowl in London’s West End, as a $50-million musical version of the Lord of the Rings premiered at the Theatre Royal in London, the city’s Daily Mail reports. Using a $2-million rotating floor with three wheels and 17 lifts to shift and rotate to create the mountains and battlefields of Middle Earth, the three-hour epic (slimmed down from the four-hour version shown in Toronto) recreates many of the scenes found in J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous trilogy.

Sure, the sound cut out during one scene, but the highlight seems to have been when evil, rampaging Uruk-Hai took to the aisles during the battle of Helm's Deep, sending several audience members — all female, the paper reports — screaming for the lobby. Reviews for the show, which officially opens June 19, say Michael Therriault stole the show as Gollum — without the benefit of the CGI used to create the character for film, as seen above. Who needs those nasty hobbitses?
