Britney Spears license case declared a mistrial
It turns out jurors in Britney Spears' trial for driving without a license couldn't decide, after all. The case was declared a mistrial, even after Judge James Steele instructed the jury to try again on Monday and even let lawyers make additional closing arguments today, the AP reports.
Spears came close to bucking the matter altogether: The jury's final vote was 10-2 in favor of acquittal. Steele has since dismissed the case. Maybe they decided having a valid Louisiana drivers license was almost as good as having a California license after all.
Today's outcome shows my client did nothing wrong. I consider this a victory," said Britney's attorney, Michael Flanagan. "Britney was vindicated in that she took on a system that attempted to make an example of her celebrity."
Now the state's justice system can get back to other pressing matters, like who to prosecute after the California's pending bankruptcy.
