Britney Spears at the VMAs: Pretty dull, y'all!
That was it? That was the “surprising” appearance by Britney Spears we’ve been waiting for? After weeks of speculation about whether she’s going to show up at all, let alone crash and burn in some sneak-attack performance, the only thing MTV can say about this year’s Video Music Awards is that, well, they happened.
Oh, and that Brit won all three categories she was nominated in, including Video of the Year for Piece of Me. Yawn. They must have owed her for those super-huge ratings from last year.
Besides a couple cool performances by Rihanna and a fairly nasty look from Katy Perry — who lost Best Female Video to Spears — the only other thing that distracted from Russell Brand’s overlong, I’m-a-cool-kid monologues and missed presenter cues was Pink’s nice and violent rendition of So What. That pretty much sums it up right there.
Thanks to overzealous MTV PR folks, we spent the whole night waiting to see if Spears (covered in bronzer and looking quite trim) was hitting the stage, since our celebrity obsessed culture is ever suspicious of media types. Instead, all we got after two hours and 15 minutes was Kanye West ripping off the Olympics. Sheesh.
