Bryan Singer is returning to direct a new 'X-Men'
Brett Ratner had his shot to ruin the X-Men franchise, but there's hope yet, since Bryan Singer realized what a colossal disaster Superman Returns was, so he's gonna be back for X-Men: First Class, FilmSchoolRejects.com reports. Wait, does that mean more convoluted backstorys and nerdish ephemera in theaters? Yes, it does.
"I’m prepping up to do a movie called Jack the Giant Killer (at) Warner Brothers, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men First Class Origins picture, which is kind of cool," Singer said during a UStream live feed. The story (geek alert) will follow the first group of mutants at the Xavier School, which includes Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, Jean Grey and Professor X.
"We want it to be like the recent, darker (Harry) Potters. It should not be a kiddie movie: we’re in the X-Men world so you can’t suddenly change the tone," producer Lauren Shuler Donner said. "The First Class comics are really fun — they’re funnier than any other comics I’ve read. Basically in each one the kids are fighting strange villains, sometimes it’s aliens, sometimes it’s monsters. I want to get a flavour of that world.”
The O.C. and Chuck creator Josh Schwartz is taking on the script, but there's no target date for First Class, so keep your glasses taped up 'til we hear one, dorks.
