Charlize Theron is a UN messenger of peace

Tbdcharlizetheron111808 Charlize Theron is the latest big name celeb who has been tapped by the United Nations to spread the word. The 33-year-old actress was announced as the latest UN Messenger of Peace Monday by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the AP reports.

Theron was taking on her new responsibilities "very humbly, with a very excited heart" after agreeing to to work on a new campaign called UNite to End Violence Against Women.

"This is something that has been very dear to me, and disturbing to me for a long time," she said.

That's obvious, since a 15-year-old Theron watched her mom shoot her alcoholic dad when he was threatening the family. She has since worked at a rape crisis center in South Africa, her native country, and founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project to promote HIV/AIDS education.

She's the ninth celeb messenger for the UN, joining Jordan's Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, George Clooney and Michael Douglas. Kinda makes all the Lindsay Lohans and Sienna Millers of the world look even more foolish, doesn't she?
