Charlotte Rae from 'Facts of Life' reveals her husband was gay
First we learned that Lisa Whelchel from The Facts of Life has a new movie role with Tyler Perry, now we find out that erstwhile Mrs. Garrett Charlotte Rae was married to a man for 25 years before finding out he was gay. The show's title really does fit in so many ways.
Rae says in a new memoir called The Facts of My Life -- see what she did there? -- that after marrying composer John Strauss in 1950 and having two sons, she found out in 1975 that Strauss was in fact gay, and that's why her marriage ended. The New York Post obtained an excerpt in which Rae explained her reaction:
"First came the shock of what he had done behind my back, then the sting of being deceived for years," the 86-year-old write. "All I could feel was the betrayal and, worse than that, my shame. ... John's secret confirmed my feelings of inferiority. That I was less than a woman ...That I didn't deserve to be loved and valued."
Why come out with this now? Well, Strauss died in 2011, so there's that, but also, Mrs. Garrett is 86 now. When you make it to 86, you must really not care who knows what anymore.
