Christian Dior fires designer John Galliano after anti-Semitic rant

rsz_tbd-johngalliano030211.jpgFashion label Christian Dior fired designer John Galliano on Tuesday after a video clip of him making anti-Semitic remarks at a cafe was circulated by a British newspaper, Reuters reports. He was already in hot water for being accused of the same crude behavior at the very same restaurant, so it's not like this was an isolated incident, either.

"I very firmly condemn what was said by John Galliano, which totally contradicts the values which have always been defended by Christian Dior," Dior CEO Sidney Toledano told Reuters in a statement, noting the "odious nature" of the comments made it necessary. Galliano has worked at the French firm for 15 years, and was fired only three days before the Dior show at Paris Fashion Week.

Paris police were called last Thursday when a drunk Galliano was accused of berating a couple at La Perle in the city of lights, making racist and anti-Semitic comments, which is against the law under French hate-speech laws. Dior suspended the designer the next day, since a similar complaint was made against him last October at the same establishment.

On Monday, Britain's Sun newspaper posted video of the rant, which showed him saying detestable things like, "I love Hitler. Your mother, your forefathers would be f---ing gassed and f---ing dead." We're surprised it took a whole day to can him. Watch the video above.

That prompted Oscar winner Natalie Portman, a Jewish actress who happens to be the face of Miss Dior Cherie perfume, to say she was "deeply shocked and disgusted by the video" and blasted Galliano in a statement.

"In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way," Portman said Monday. "I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful."

Wow, only one day after Natalie complained, the dirtbag is toast. That little gold statue really does bring some heft with it. Galliano, meanwhile, is rumored to be considering a defamation suit against his accusers, which will be hard to win, what with video of him saying those awful things.
