Cruise gets honored; Baldwin getting married?
Tom Cruise may not be the funniest actor in Hollywood, but that hasn’t stopped the Friars Club from giving him his due.
The actor was given the Friars Club Entertainment Icon Award on Tuesday — just the fourth time it’s been handed out — joining Douglas Fairbanks, Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra. The ultimate Friar, Jerry Lewis, was supposed to hand Cruise the award, but had to cancel after being hospitalized overnight for low blood sugar. (His publicist says he’s okay.) Instead, Cruise received his trophy from Rock of Ages co-star Alec Baldwin — but he seems to have no shortage of admirers for his performance in the film.
The Los Angeles Times reached out to a pair of genuine hair-metal rockers to see what they thought of Cruise’s performance in Rock of Ages, and Bret Michaels of Poison had something interesting to say. It seems that while filming Rock of Ages in South Florida, Cruise made at least one trip up to Tampa.
“He hung out at our Tampa arena show, and he’s very intense and sincere, in a good way,” Michaels said. “When he works on a film, he always gets the part exactly right. And now he’s an ’80s rock god.”
Meanwhile, speaking of Baldwin: The New York Post reports he’s about to tie the knot again. The actor and his fiancee, yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas, are planning a Catholic wedding on the weekend of June 30 at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in New York. Film buffs might be interested to know that’s the same church where Francis Ford Coppola filmed the baptism scene in The Godfather, and Martin Scorsese used it in Mean Streets and Gangs of New York.
