E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic reveals she has breast cancer
In another well-publicized personal crisis, E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic announced on Monday's Today show she has breast cancer. This is way worse than their ongoing public discussions about in vitro fertilization. In fact, it's almost good she was getting those treatments.
"Through my attempt to get pregnant through IVF, we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer. It's been a shock," she said. She noted that she and husband Bill Rancic (the original winner of The Apprentice) were at the doctor getting ready for a third round -- the first resulted in a miscarriage and the second was unsuccessful -- when a mammogram found the disease in an early stage.
"I wasn't prepared to get a mammogram until I was 40 years old, like I'd been told. I never in my wildest dreams expected anything to be wrong," she said, noting she had resisted but finally relented when told the pregnancy hormones would accelerate cancer cells.
"I went into the hospital in L.A., when they came in to tell me, they said it pretty quickly, they just said, 'I'm sorry, you have breast cancer.' It's what you expect, but so much more, it was like, incredible instant sobbing and the world just crashed down around me. I couldn't believe it—36 years old, no family history? I couldn't believe it."
Rancic will be undergoing surgery this week, then getting six weeks of radiation. Then she and Bill are back to trying for a tyke.
"I'm not gonna give up, I want that baby. And what's amazing is that baby will have saved my life," she said. "Now I truly believe that God was looking out for me. Had I gotten pregnant (earlier), a few years down the line I could be a lot sicker."
