Gidget the Taco Bell Chihuahua dies at 15

Tbd-gidgettacobell072309 Gidget, the long-standing Chihuahua mascot for Taco Bell, died from a stroke Tuesday night, People reports. She was 15. If only Walter Cronkite were here to break the news for us, it would make the emptiness seem so much more bearable.

"She made so many people happy," trainer Sue Chipperton told the mag. Well, maybe not all those Mexican civil rights advocates who didn't like the stereotype, but hey, a celebrity is dead, so we won't dwell on those sorts of things.

Gidget was mostly retired, although she still took part in the occasional photo shoot. She spent most of her time lying in the sun, Chipperton said.

"I like to joke that it's like looking after a plant," she said. But the pooch was a consummate professional. "Gidget always knew where the camera was," Sue added. And now she's hawking burritos and Mexican pizzas in dog heaven. Farewell, you canine pioneer!
