NBC is coming out swinging to win the fanboy demo with the upcoming release of its serial killer thriller, Hannibal. Yes, that Hannibal, from Silence of the Lambs and so forth. And now they've signed The X-Files poster girl Gillian Anderson to her first TV role in a decade! Too bad all the 18-to-35s they want are now 36-50s.

Anderson will play Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, therapist to Mads Mikkelsen's Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Entertainment Weekly reports. "Every therapist needs their own head examined and we are ecstatic that Gillian Anderson has chosen Hannibal to mark her return to American television after 10 years to portray Dr. Lecter's personal psychiatrist," writer and producer Bryan Fuller said in a statement. "Her intelligence and sophistication, not to mention her pedigree of ground-breaking TV, make her the perfect actress to match wits and psychological manipulations with one of the greatest villains of pop culture. I couldn't be more excited."

Apparently Anderson had once tried to nab the Clarice Starling role in the 2001 movie Hannibal after Jodie Foster left, but because Gillian's X-Files contract forbid her from playing another FBI agent beside Dana Scully, Julianne Moore scored the win. She'll be joining a cast that includes Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, Eddie Izzard, Gina Torres, Molly Shannon, Ellen Greene and Chelan Simmons for at least a multi-episode arc, before she's likely kidnapped by aliens or in a coma from cancer or attacked by vampires or whatever.
