Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong may be one of those melodramatic fools — neurotic to the bone, no doubt about it — but his mind wasn’t playing tricks on him this weekend, when he was hospitalized for what TMZ described as a throat problem.

The band was forced to cancel a concert in Italy.

“We’re beyond upset,” drummer Tre Cool said in a video on the band’s website. “We’re as sad as you guys are. Billie is extremely upset about it.” Bassist Mike Dirnt added that Armstrong was “rushed to the hospital … due to illness” on Saturday.

While that “illness” wasn’t specified, TMZ caught up with Armstrong in an L.A. airport, where he mouthed that his voice was gone.
