'Harry Potter' actress Afshan Azad's brother jailed for attacking her
The sad saga of Harry Potter actress Afshan Azad's family troubles has come to court, with her brother getting six months in jail for attacking his sister because her boyfriend was not Muslim, the BBC reports.
Azad, who played Padma Patil, was punched and dragged by her hair after Ashraf Azad, 28, heard the 22-year-old talking to her Hindu boyfriend on the phone. He pleaded guilty to assault after Afshan was called a "prostitute," a "slag" and tolld, "marry a Muslim or you die." She fled from the family home in Longsight, England, out a bedroom window the day after the attack.
"It must have been a miserable and frightening experience for your sister which, she suggested, lasted for about three hours or so," Judge Roger Thomas told Ashraf. "This is a sentence that is designed to punish you for what you did and also to send out a clear message to others that domestic violence involving circumstances such as have arisen here cannot be tolerated."
Afshan had pleaded with the court to not jail her brother, who had told their father Abdul to discipline her after the phone call. Abdul apparently responded by threatening to send her to Bangladesh for an arranged marriage.
